Africa Cup 2022 / qualification

The qualification for the Africa Cup 2022 should take place from October 9, 2019 to September 9, 2020. Due to the postponement of the tournament, the qualification was extended until March 2021.

52 of the 56 member associations of the CAF take part. Eritrea and Somalia as well as Reunion and Zanzibar do not participate. As in 2019, the final round in Cameroon will be held with 24 teams. The host of the final tournament also takes part in the qualification, but is automatically qualified. At the end of June 2020, the final tournament was postponed by one year to January / February 2022.

52 teams registered for the qualification, which will be held in two rounds as in 2019 . Eritrea and Somalia do not participate. Reunion and Zanzibar are not full members of the CAF and are therefore excluded from participation. In the July 2019 draw, the participating teams were divided into five different pots based on their placements in the FIFA world rankings of 14 June 2019. The eight weakest teams determined in this way will compete in the first round in October 2019 in the knockout system with a return game. The four winners of the first round and the remaining 44 higher-placed teams had already been drawn into twelve groups of four in July 2019. The second round will be played in the double round robin format from November 2019 to September 2020. As in 2019, the games of the host of the final round who participates in Group F will be rated regularly. For the final round, the group winners and runners-up will qualify from all twelve groups, with the exception of group F. From group F only one other team qualifies besides host Cameroon.

If more than two teams are tied, the placement is determined by the following criteria:

1. Number of points in direct comparison
2. Goal difference in direct comparison
3. Number of goals in direct comparison
4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
5. If, after applying criteria 1 to 4, two teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied, but only for the matches between the teams in question

If this does not lead to a definitive placement either, criteria 6 to 9 are used:

6. Goal difference from all group matches
7. Number of goals in all group matches
8. Number of away goals in all group matches
9. Drawing of lots

If only two teams are tied, criteria 3, 5 and 8 are not applied.

First round

The draw took place on July 18, 2019 in Cairo ( Egypt ). The first leg was played on October 9, the second leg on October 13, 2019.
