The National Heroes Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Zambian capital Lusaka . It is mainly used for soccer games and is home to the games of the Zambian national soccer team and, since 2017, the games of the Lusaka Dynamos soccer club . It seats 60,000 and was opened in 2014. The construction costs amounted to 94 million US dollars .
history
The name of the stadium goes back to the flight accident of the DHC-5 Buffalo AF-319 of the Zambian Air Force on April 27, 1993, in which 18 players of the Zambian national soccer team and some officials were killed.
The sports facility is in Lusaka Province , on the Great North Road. The National Heroes Stadium is in close proximity to Independence Stadium , which opened in 1964, and the Heroes Acres Memorial, where the players killed in this Gabon air accident are buried.
The venue, next to the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, was the venue for the U-20 African Cup of Nations 2017 .
