Edgar Chagwa Lungu (born November 11, 1956 in Ndola or Chadiza ) is a Zambian politician and the sixth President of the Republic of Zambia since February 9, 2015.

Edgar Lungu received a Bachelor of Law from the University of Zambia in 1981 . He then underwent training as an officer. He worked as a lawyer and joined the United Party for National Development (UPND). In 2001, he moved to the newly founded Patriotic Front (PF) under Michael Sata and served as his country's justice and defense minister. Following Sata's death in October 2014 and a transition period under Vice President Guy Scott , Lungu became the sixth elected President of the Republic of Zambia for the remaining year and a half of Sata's term in office. He narrowly won the elections on January 24, 2015 against Hakainde Hichilema (UPND) with 48.33% of the vote to 46.67%. He was officially introduced to his post on February 9, 2015. Numerous other heads of state were present at the inauguration ceremony.

On August 11, 2016, Lungu ran again for the presidential election. He was re-elected with 50.3% of the vote.

Lungu is married and has six children. He belongs to the Nsenga ethnic group .
