Rupiah Banda

Rupiah Bwezani Banda (born February 13, 1937 in Gwanda , Southern Rhodesia ) is a Zambian politician . Banda was President of Zambia from 2008 to 2011 . Banda's tenure lasted until 2011, when the tenure of his deceased predecessor Levy Mwanawasa would have ended.

Banda worked from 1965 as ambassador to Zambia and in state organizations in the country. From 1975 to 1976 he was Foreign Minister and in the 1980s Minister of State for Mines . After retiring from politics in 2000, he became Vice President under Levy Mwanawasa in 2006. After Mwanawasa's death on August 19, 2008, he held the office of president on a provisional basis until he won the elections two months later.

Youth and education

Banda was born in Gwanda in what is now Zimbabwe and initially grew up there. However, he received his education in Zambia, where he attended the Munali School , an elite secondary school in Lusaka . Banda began his scholarship-financed studies at the University of Addis Ababa in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia , but then went - again with a scholarship - to the University of Lund in Lund , Sweden , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in economic history in 1964 . According to its website, there were only about 100 university graduates in all of Zambia at the time. After returning to Zambia, Banda enrolled at the National Institute for Public Affairs (NIPA) to study diplomacy and international relations ; soon after, however, he was transferred to Cairo as ambassador .

Career

Career until retirement from politics (1960 to 2000)

During his studies Banda represented the Zambian United National Independence Party (UNIP) in Europe from 1960 to 1964 . In 1965 he became the Zambian ambassador to the United Arab Republic (then Egypt and Yemen ) and in 1967 Zambian ambassador to the USA. From 1970 to 1974 he was Chairman of the Agricultural Development Company ( Rural Development Corporation ) and General Manager of the National Marketing Board (NAMBOARD), a government organization, the predecessor of today's Food Reserve Agency (FRA, about food reserve authority staple) produced locally bought up. From 1974 to 1975 Banda Zambia was permanent representative to the United Nations and, among other things, President of the UN Council for Namibia , which accompanied the country from the rule of the South African apartheid regime to independence.

From 1975 to 1976, Banda was Zambia's first foreign minister. In this role he worked mainly for a ceasefire in Angola and the dialogue between South Africa and other countries in the region. From 1978 to 1983, Banda sat for the Munali constituency - the largest in the country - in the National Assembly of Zambia .

In addition, Banda was active in the economy. In the 1970s he bought the mine supplier Robert Hudson Ltd. and Allenwest Zambia Ltd., an electrical engineering services company. He also owns Chiparamba Enterprises Ltd., which owns and manages real estate. For a time he was the owner of Chipoza Holdings.

When Banda did not succeed in reelection for his constituency in 1983, he became senior district governor for the urban district of Lusaka ( Senior District Governor for Lusaka Urban District ) and then Minister of State for Mines. In 1988 Banda regained his seat in the National Assembly, but lost it again in the 1991 elections, when multiple parties were allowed to vote for the first time in 17 years .

In 2000, when internal party tensions broke out in the United National Independence Party (UNIP), Banda withdrew from active politics. He ran a 186 hectare (460 acres ) farm in Chipata with arable and some livestock farming.

"Retirement" and return to politics (2000 to today)

Banda was no longer officially involved in politics during his time as a farmer. In 2002, however, he moved from the United National Independence Party to the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) of the now ruling President Levy Mwanawasa , who campaigned against corruption and was open to the work of opposition politicians in his government. Banda campaigned unofficially for the MMD in Zambia's Eastern Province , which had been a bastion of UNIP since 1991.

In the presidential elections on September 28, 2006, the MMD became the strongest party in the Eastern Province. The re-elected President Mwanawasa brought Banda back into politics and installed him as Vice President of Zambia in October 2006. He replaced Lupando Mwape , whose electorate in the Northern Province was not enough for an MMD victory this time. Analysts therefore saw Banda's appointment as a reward for the voters of the Eastern Province.

On June 29, 2008, Mwanawasa suffered a stroke and Banda and the rest of the cabinet continued to run the government. When Mwanawasa died on August 19, 2008, Banda took over the presidency.

In the elections on October 30, 2008, he was elected the new president by a narrow majority (40.09% versus 38.13% for the Patriotic Front ). He was sworn in on November 2nd just two hours after the votes were counted. Opposition leader Michael Sata ( Patriotic Front ) then called for a review of the result and spoke of the corruption of the election commissions.

Banda's tenure lasted until 2011, when Mwanawasa's tenure would have ended.

Family and interest in football

Banda married Hope Mwansa Makulu in 1966, with whom he raised five sons. On October 11, 2000 (according to other sources, not earlier than 2002), his wife died of breast cancer . After his temporary retirement from politics, Banda remarried. He has twins with his wife Thandiwe. Banda is also the father of a son with the younger sister of the South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela .

Banda is a football fan and was the leader of the Bola Bola group, the first group of Zambian football fans to travel internationally to their national team's matches. Banda was Vice President of Football Association of Zambia ( Football Association of Zambia , shortly FAZ), which he belongs for life. He is also president of the Chiparamba Soccer Academy ( Chiparamba Football Academy ), founded by his son Nenani Banda and Swedish businessmen and among other players Boyd Mwila , Clifford Mulenga and Yoram Mwila has produced.
