Independence Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Lusaka , the capital of Zambia . It is mainly used for soccer games, but also for political events. The stadium held 30,000 spectators. It was closed in 2004 due to dilapidation , but was opened again shortly afterwards. In October 2006 repairs were called for because the stadium was about to "collapse".
A new stadium with 70,000 seats should be ready for the All-Africa Games in 2011, in 2008 the host resigned due to a lack of funds. The National Heroes Stadium with 60,000 seats was only opened in 2014 .
