The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium (formerly Akwa Ibom International Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Uyo , the capital of the Nigerian state Akwa Ibom . The facility serves as the home stadium of the Nigerian national soccer team and Akwa United in the Nigeria Professional Football League as well as various social, cultural and religious events. The contract for the construction of the stadium went to the construction company Julius Berger Nigeria , which completed the construction in 2014. The ultra-modern stadium with 30,000 seats was modeled on the Allianz Arena .

Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel renamed Akwa Ibom Stadium the Godswill Obot Akpabio International Stadium immediately after he was sworn in at the stadium on May 29, 2015. Godswill Akpabio was his predecessor as the state governor .
