The Witten Symphonic Wind Orchestra "BloW" eV is an independent orchestral association in the German city of Witten . It was founded in 2012 as a sponsoring association of the Witten Wind Orchestra “BloW” and in 2013 it was converted into a registered, non-profit music association.

founding

The origins of the orchestra can be traced back to an initiative of the Rotary Club Witten in 2006, during which, on the sidelines of a concert by the Junge Bläserphilharmonie NRW , on August 20, 2006 in the Saalbau Witten , the founding of a previously non-existent wind orchestra for Witten was called. This initiative took place in cooperation with the municipal music school in Witten.

At the first founding meeting on August 24, 2006, 19 interested parties gathered for an information event in Haus Witten . At this meeting, a first rehearsal date was scheduled for October 28, 2006, for which 25 musicians came under the direction of Witten's music school director Michael Eckelt. The trio from the Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 by Edward Elgar was played as the first piece of music . 70 members have been organized in the orchestra association since January 2019.

Orchestra exchange within the framework of the city partnership

Inspired by the student exchange of the French saxophonist Julien Corbel, from Witten's twin town Beauvais , as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange in Witten , the orchestra was able to establish contact with the Orchester d'Harmonie de Beauvais in 2009 . On the occasion of Local Hero Week Witten , for the 2010 Capital of Culture year in Essen and the Ruhr area , an orchestra exchange took place in Witten for the first time. A year later, 35 BloWers returned to France. Since then, there has been a regular exchange between the two orchestras every three years.

successes

The orchestra has taken part twice in the National Music Festival of the Volksmusikerbund NRW . The highest award in the wind orchestra category was achieved in 2014 in the intermediate level and in 2018 in the upper level with the title “Excellent Success”.

The composition was premiered on the occasion of the anniversary concert “10 Years BloW” on November 13, 2016 in the Saalbau Witten, under the baton of the composer by “BloW”. In the approx. 4:50 min. Work, "Love brings great joy" and "I don't know what should it mean" are two German folk songs processed into a symphonic work for a large wind orchestra according to Friedrich Silcher .

In spring 2019, the BloW moved into its own rehearsal rooms . The "BloW Schall (t) Zentrale am Esel" is a former switchgear building and after ten years of vacancy, it was converted in-house. With the Brass Band Westfalen , another orchestral association uses these rooms. In addition, there are regular events of the district association of the Volksmusikerbund NRW .
