Heurelho da Silva Gomes (born February 15, 1981 in João Pinheiro ) is a Brazilian soccer goalkeeper who is under contract with Watford FC .

Career

society

He started playing football in the neighboring town of Sete Lagoas at the local Esporte Clube Democrata. Then he went to Clube de Regatas Brasil and on to Guarani FC . He then moved to the youth department of Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . There he was discovered by the Dutch scout Piet de Visser and referred to PSV Eindhoven , where he signed a contract in 2004. On August 11, 2004, he made his debut for PSV against Red Star Belgrade . After initial criticism, Gomes developed into secure support. In its first year, PSV reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League . As a regular goalkeeper, he won four consecutive Dutch champions with the club between 2005 and 2008 .

Due to his good performances, he developed into a crowd favorite in Eindhoven. In the 2004/05 season, Gomes did not concede for 971 minutes. In the same year, he managed another 817 minutes in a row not to allow a goal. In 2006/07 he almost broke his own record when he did not concede for 956 minutes in a row. However, Gomes was unable to break the record of 1,082 minutes set by Heinz Stuy in 1971. At the end of this season, only the goal difference decided the championship, in which PSV was one more goal than Ajax Amsterdam .

In the winter of the 2007/08 season there were some arguments between the board of PSV and Gomes, so that they parted ways at the end of the season. On June 26, 2008, Gomes signed a contract with Tottenham Hotspur . He played for Tottenham for the first time in a friendly against CD Denia on July 19, 2008 . In August 2008 he won his first cup with the English at the Feyenoord anniversary tournament. In Tottenham he went number one in the 2008/09 season. After Gomes looked confident in the preparation games, the team had a bad start to the new season. But in the period that followed, the Brazilian developed into the desired support. During the 2009/10 season, Gomes was seriously injured and was temporarily replaced by Carlo Cudicini , whom the Spurs officials had brought from Chelsea at the beginning of the season. After his recovery he ousted Cudicini again. Through constant good performance, he led his team to the 2010/11 Champions League participation. This was Tottenham's first qualification for this competition since its introduction in 1992. The club had last participated in the previous tournament, the European Cup in 1962. After a few serious mistakes, Gomes lost his regular place and was only the third goalkeeper at times. Therefore, on January 31, 2013, Gomes switched to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on loan until the end of the season , where he replaced Tim Wiese , who was in shape and who had been suspended in the meantime . Gomes was up to and including the 28th matchday in the goal of the relegation battle Hoffenheim. At the beginning of April he broke his left metacarpal bone in the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf , had to undergo surgery and was out for the rest of the season.

For the 2013/14 season , Gomes returned to Spurs as a substitute goalkeeper. In his last season at the club, however, he was no longer used.

For the 2014/15 season , Gomes signed a one-year contract with the second division club Watford FC . In July 2017, it was announced that Gomes was extending his contract with Watford until 2019.

National team

At the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup , a tournament to which Brazil sent an U-23 selection, Gomes made his debut in the Brazilian national football team . In the opening game on July 13, 2003 against Mexico, he ran for the first time. During the tournament, Gomes played five games and reached the final of the competition. There they lost 1-0 against the Mexican selection . The following year he was number one in the U-23 team that should qualify for the Summer Olympics, but failed. In 2005 he was called up to the squad for the Confederations Cup , but was only number three behind Dida and Marcos .

For the soccer World Cup in 2006 in the following year, he was no longer considered by national coach Carlos Alberto Parreira . This further preferred Dida as well as Rogério Ceni and Júlio César . After his replacement by Dunga , Gomes came back to the national team. In 2007 the goalkeeper was in the squad for the Copa America , which the Brazilian team won. He was just a spectator behind Doni . For the next three years he was regularly appointed to the Seleção squad without playing. In May 2010, coach Dunga called him to the squad for the World Cup in South Africa , but without getting chances on the regular place between the posts. The team was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Netherlands without Gomes being used.
