history

A remnant of part of a Roman road goes through the place. It is believed that this road had a connection with the Alto Minho and continued to Galicia .

There is a document from 1097, after the community was called "Moazellus" at that time. Legend goes on to say that this name was derived from an old lady of French origin who lived there. In the course of time Mademoiselle became Moazellus, later Mozelos.

Mozelos is a community ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Santa Maria da Feira , in the Aveiro district . It covers 5.8 square kilometers and has 7142 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The population density is 1229 inhabitants per square kilometer.

economy

Mozelos is still an important place in the manufacture of Portuguese cork products today . Américo Amorim, one of the founders of Amorim & Irmão, was born here in 1934. He was undisputedly the most important businessman in this field worldwide and, next to Belmiro de Azevedo, the richest man in Portugal.
