Belmiro Mendes de Azevedo (born February 17, 1938 in Tuías , Marco de Canaveses , Northern Portugal ; † November 29, 2017 in Porto ) was a Portuguese entrepreneur , president of the Sonae Group and one of the richest Portuguese .

Azevedo was born the son of a carpenter in a northern Portuguese village. Funded by scholarships , he studied chemistry and graduated with honors in 1963. As a student he was hired by a textile company.

After two years, he switched to Sonae (Sociedade Nacional de Estratificados), which was still an insignificant parquet manufacturer at the time. After the death of Sonae founder Afonso Pinto Magalhães , Azevedo took over the majority of the company in 1984. From then on, he built up a group that closed in 2006 with a turnover of 4.3 billion euros and a profit of 600 million euros.

Sonae includes several timber companies, shopping malls, a telecommunications company , various financial services and media. In September 2007 the “ Alexa ” shopping center opened on Alexanderplatz in Berlin , and in October 2009 the Loop 5 shopping center in Weiterstadt near Frankfurt am Main . The first German shopping center of the Sonae Group, the Münster Arkaden in Münster , opened in 2005 (first construction phase) and 2006 respectively. A previously planned center at Dortmund Central Station was abandoned.

After his son Paulo Azevedo officially took over the management, Azevedo referred to himself since May 1, 2007 only as "President without executive function". Azevedo was the second richest man in Portugal with a fortune of 1.5 billion euros. The 2010 " Forbes List of the Richest Men in the World " ranked him 655th.
