São Paio de Oleiros (sometimes shortened to Oleiros ) is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Santa Maria da Feira . It has 4069 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The animated Christmas crib Presépio Cavalinho in the municipality, which is considered to be the largest in the world, is known nationwide .
history
Traces of human settlement go back to the Copper Age . In the Castro culture there were at least two fortified settlements ( Lapa de Cima and Lapa de Baixo ). Not much is known from the subsequent Roman period, nor from the subsequent periods under the Suebi and as part of the Visigoth Empire , and no significant traces have survived from the period of the subsequent Arab rule from 711.
The place was first documented as uilla de olleirolos in 1050. Saint Pelagius ( Portuguese: Santo Pelágio, which changed into today's São Paio) was chosen as the patron saint of the place . That namesake São Paio is said to have been a young man from the time of the Reconquista , who was killed by the Moors in 925 and then venerated as a martyr by the local Christian Mozarabs . The local parish church was called Ecclesia Santi Pelagij de Oleyros in 1200 , in the royal surveys of 1288 it was listed as Sancti Pelagii de Oleyros , and developed through Sam Paayo de Oleiros to the current spelling.
1514 the place was given city status by King D. Manuel I . São Paio de Oleiros has been part of the Santa Maria da Feira district since around the time of the Napoleonic invasions at the beginning of the 19th century, with an interruption from 1926 to 1928 when it was part of Espinho . The industry, which began to emerge slowly in the 18th century and became increasingly present from the middle of the 19th century, ensured some development. Mention should be made of the paper manufacture, which has been here since 1758 and has been important since 1811, and the textile industry since the first spinning mill opened in 1855. The arrival of the Linha do Vouga railway line , which King Manuel II inaugurated on November 23, 1908 with a stop in São Paio de Oleiros, and the opening of the regionally important Hospital-Asilo de Nossa Senhora da Saúde on January 6 1909 were further milestones in the development of the place.
