Matthew James "Matt" Doherty (born January 16, 1992 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player . He is under contract with the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and can be used as both a left and right full -back. He has been an Irish international since March 2018 .

Career

Doherty started playing football with the Dublin amateur clubs FC Home Farm and FC Belvedere and joined the youth of Bohemians Dublin in 2009 . After he had shown a strong performance in a friendly against Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2010 , the opponent invited him to practice training. Although he had not yet played a professional game for Bohemians, the Wolves were convinced of the talent of the full-back and signed him. Doherty signed a two-year deal in Wolverhampton. He made his competitive debut on January 8, 2011 in the FA Cup game against the Doncaster Rovers . In the Premier League he made his debut on September 24, 2011 at Liverpool FC .

After Doherty had come to Wolverhampton mainly in the reserve, he was loaned to Hibernian Edinburgh for the remainder of the 2011/12 season at the beginning of 2012 . For the Hibs , he came to 17 missions by the end of the season, in which he scored twice. At his loan club, he occasionally played in the center- back position.

After returning to Wolverhampton, Doherty was loaned to League One club Bury for three months . For Bury, he completed 22 missions until he was sent back to the Wolves in January 2013 due to financial problems with the Shakers .

After the engagement of Dean Saunders as the new coach of the now second-rate Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2013, Doherty became a regular in the right defense. Under Saunders' successor Kenny Jackett , he was able to keep his place. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, he extended his contract term until 2021. In this season he won the championship with his team and returned to the Premier League. On November 30, 2018, he played his 200th league game for Wolverhampton in the 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City , in which he scored the interim lead in the 18th minute of the game.

Matt Doherty moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2020 and signed a contract there until 2024.

National team

Doherty had played for Ireland's U-19 and U-21 national teams before being nominated for the first time for his home country's A squad on March 11, 2016, for two friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia . However, he made his debut two years later on March 23, 2018 in the 1-0 defeat against Turkey . On November 18, 2019, he equalized the 1: 1 final score in the 85th minute of the qualifying match for the 2020 European Championship against Denmark .
