Johannes Gloël

Johannes Eduard Gloël (born April 22, 1857 in Körbelitz , † June 16, 1891 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant clergyman and university professor .

Life

Johannes Eduard Gloël was the son of the pastor and later superintendent Johann Friedrich Gloël and his wife Anne, daughter of the superintendent Heinrich Rathmann (1802-1857). The names of his siblings are known:

  • Heinrich Gloël , Goethe researcher;
  • Anna Gloël (* 1870; † 1935), married to Johannes Gottfried Glöckner (1861–1932), Superintendent.

At the beginning he received private lessons in his parents' house and attended the cathedral grammar school from 1869 to 1872 and then, together with his brother Heinrich Gloël, until 1875 the pedagogy of the monastery of Our Dear Women in Magdeburg .

The end of 1875 matriculated he at the University of Halle and started a theology, philosophy and history studies; in June 1879 he passed the candidate exam in Halle.

From 1879 to 1881 he was employed as a private tutor for Count Limburg-Stirum in Groß Peterwitz in Silesia , during which time he passed the preacher's examination in Halle in March 1880 and the official examination in Magdeburg in October 1881. In November 1881 he became a member of the Cathedral Candidate Foundation in Berlin and continued his studies in Berlin as a scholarship holder of the Luther Monument Foundation Worms .

On April 21, 1882 he was cathedral assistant preacher and adjunct and on April 1, 1883 inspector at the cathedral candidate pen. On April 22, 1884 he became inspector of the Silesian Konvikt in Halle.

On March 15, 1886 he received his doctorate with his dissertation The Spirit in its Significance for the Annunciation of Salvation by Paul , which was printed under the title The State in the Flesh according to Pauline testimony , as Lic. Theol. and received his habilitation in Halle; at the same time he became a private lecturer for the subject New Testament at the theological faculty of the University of Halle .

In 1888 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Erlangen and from October 1, 1888 he was full professor for introductory sciences and New Testament exegesis at the university. One of his students was the later religious scholar Rudolf Otto .

Johannes Eduard Gloël was married to Rosalie (née Ziegler) since 1888, they had two children together, of whom we know by name:

  • Johannes Gloël (born December 14, 1891 in Erlangen; † June 25, 1959 ibid), pastor, married to Anna (born October 4, 1899 in Buchbrunn ; † unknown), daughter of pastor Erich Wilhelm Hermann Erhard.

Writing

In 1885 he recorded impressions from a trip to the Netherlands with students in his book Hollands ecclesiastical life . When he was in Erlangen, he published The Holy Spirit in Paul's Annunciation and also took part in a controversy about the authenticity of the Letter to the Galatians with The Recent Critique of the Letter to the Galatians, checked for its justification .
