Diadema is located in the middle between São Paulo and São Bernardo do Campo |
Diadema , officially Portuguese Município de Diadema , is a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and is located south of São Paulo. In 2019, 423,884 people lived in Diadema on 30.732 km². The city is characterized by one of the highest population densities in Brazil. The urban area consists of 70% favelas .
history
Until the 1940s, the towns of Piraporinha, Eldorado, Taboão and Vila Conceição, which administratively belonged to São Bernardo , were located in today's urban area . Due to the proximity to the big city of São Paulo and the rapidly advancing industrialization from the end of the 1940s , the population increased, with the four places growing together geographically. In 1948 the Distrito Diadema (District Diadema) was founded. In a referendum on December 24, 1958, the population decided in favor of self-government. In 1959 the first city government elections were held. This year is officially considered the date of the city's foundation. On January 10, 1960, the first city prefect (mayor) of Diadema took office.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Diadema was considered one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil. On average, violent crime killed two people a day. Among other things, a stricter regulation of the curfew in restaurants and a community-based organization of the police made it possible to reduce the murder rate from 103 to below 35 per 100,000 inhabitants by 2005.
City structure
Diadema is divided into 11 bairros ( districts ), these in turn into a total of 75 sub-regions. The most populous Bairro is Taboão with around 48,000 inhabitants, the largest area Bairro is Eldorado with 6.69 km².
