Mark Geoffrey Crossley (born June 16, 1969 in Barnsley , England ) is a Welsh football player who currently works as a player- coach at Chesterfield FC .
Nottingham Forest
After Mark Crossley started his professional career at Nottingham Forest in 1987, he was able to assert himself as a regular goalkeeper for the 1990/91 season. The previous goalkeeper Steve Sutton then moved to Derby County in 1992 . In his very first season Crossley reached the final of the FA Cup with his team . On May 18, 1991 Forest lost in front of 80,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium with 1: 2 against Tottenham Hotspur to Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker . After the restructuring of English professional football, Forest rose in the Premier League in 1992/93 as bottom of the table in the second division. Crossley remained loyal to his club and managed direct resurgence. In the Premier League 1994/95 the promoted team managed a very good third place in the table behind champions Blackburn Rovers . In the following season, Nottingham reached the quarter-finals of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup , but clearly failed there at Bayern Munich . Many of Crossley's teammates had since left the team and Forest could no longer build on earlier, more successful times. It followed the renewed relegation in 1996/97 and after a temporary resurgence, a further relegation in the Premier League in 1998/99 . He also went back to the second division with his team, but was sold to Middlesbrough FC for the 2000/01 season after the club missed promotion due to financial problems .
Middlesbrough FC
The time in Middlesbrough was unhappy for Mark Crossley. He rarely got a chance and was awarded to Stoke City for a few months in 2003 . Even after his return he could not fight for a regular place and then moved to Fulham after only 23 league games in 3 years .
Fulham FC
The first two seasons in London did not go well for the now 34-year-old. Number 1 in those two years was Dutch world-class goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and Crossley only made it to goal after joining Manchester United before the 2005/06 season. After the signing of the Finnish goalkeeper Antti Niemi from Southampton FC , this phase was over quickly and he found himself on the bench. In 2006/07 he was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday for some time before moving to Oldham Athletic in 2007 .
Oldham Athletic
In the 2007/08 season Crossley met in Football League One on his long-time ex-club Nottingham Forest, which had now been relegated to the third division. While Forest rose to runner-up in the Football League Championship , Oldham missed promotion as eighth. After a tenth place in the 2008/09 season, he moved in the summer of 2009 as a player-coach for Chesterfield FC .
National team
After three games for the English U-21 selection, Mark Crossley decided to play for the Welsh national team. After all, he made eight international matches, but remained a substitute goalkeeper behind Neville Southall .
