Stephen "Steve" Sutton (born April 16, 1961 in Hartington , Derbyshire , England ) is a retired English football player .

Player career

Nottingham Forest

Steve Sutton made his debut on October 25, 1980 for the English first division club Nottingham Forest , for which he had previously been active in the youth academy. Forest won the European Cup in 1978/79 and 1979/80 in the previous two years and had England goalkeeper Peter Shilton under contract in the goalkeeping position . Sutton then had to be content with the role of substitute goalkeeper. Even after Shilton moved to Southampton FC in 1982 , this situation changed only slightly, as Forest signed the Dutch national goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen as a replacement . Only after his move to PSV Eindhoven in 1984 was Sutton able to win the duel against the newly signed Hans Segers during the 1984/85 season and win the position of the goalkeeper. The team of coach Brian Clough was able to establish itself again in the top of the Football League First Division towards the end of the 1980s and reached third place in the table in the seasons 1987/88 and 1988/89 . Since all English clubs were suspended internationally as a result of the Heysel disaster , the club was unable to participate in the UEFA Cup . Together with his teammates Stuart Pearce , Des Walker , Steve Hodge and Nigel Clough , Sutton won the English League Cup in 1989 with a 3-1 win over Luton Town and in 1990 with a 1-0 win over Oldham Athletic . On April 15, 1989, he and his teammates experienced the Hillsborough disaster in the semifinals of the FA Cup 1988/89 against Liverpool FC , in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives. In the 1990/91 season he lost his regular place to Mark Crossley and so missed participation in the final of the FA Cup 1990/91 that Forest lost 2-1 after extra time against Tottenham Hotspur to Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne .

Derby County

After being demoted to number two, he joined Forest's rival Derby County for £ 300,000 in 1992 . Derby played at this time only in the now second-rate First Division. By 1996 Steve Sutton played 61 league games for County before moving to Birmingham City . It was followed by other moves to Notts County and Grantham Town, before he ended his career in 1998.
