Life

In addition to studying at a university of applied sciences in Koblenz (1972–1976), distance learning art theory at the University of Tübingen (1989–1990) and philosophy at the University of Bonn (1998–2002), the meeting with Marina Abramovic during her seminar Cleaning the House was the main one (1999) of influence for her artistic work.

Susanne Krell collects places. For the artist, being a place does not primarily mean geographical reality, but rather the layers of ideas, myths and history hidden behind it. In a process of getting involved in the location, Susanne Krell transfers its concept of ideas into an artistic medium. Using the frottage technique, she rubs the surface of stone structures on paper or canvases that are either left raw or pre-colored in various ways. Susanne Krell travels wherever people have left their mark on stone. Again and again there are places in the focus of cultural, social or religious tensions such as the Middle East , Russia , China or Eastern Europe . In the course of the years, a large collection of rub-offs from a wide variety of locations has been created, which are preferably related in room installations to the surroundings and their objects. Part of her artistic concept is the disclosure of the frottage inherent temporality and historicity in photographs, videos, projections, sound documents or collages.
