In 1866, the Derix glass painting workshops in Goch were founded by Wilhelm Derix I (* 1837, † 1919). 30 years later the first branch was opened in Kevelaer . His son Wilhelm Derix II (* 1872) took over his father's workshop in Goch in 1903. His brother Heinrich I (* 1869) also took over the workshop in Kevelaer. In 1908 Derix supplied the Vatican with the window entitled "Christ gives Peter the supreme pastoral office" and made two more windows for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. In 1910, on the occasion of an audience with Pope Pius X, the New Year's Eve order and the title "Papal Court Glass Painting W. Derix" were awarded to the company founder Wilhelm Derix and his sons.

A year later the first US representative office was established at CLINTON GLASS in Chicago . In 1941 Wilhelm Derix III joined. (* 1904) joined the company and moved to Düsseldorf almost twenty years later after the workshops had separated .

Group structure

Derix Glasstudios is a limited liability company and limited partnership with a central location in Taunusstein. The international company has international offices in Chicago, London and Oakland.

The company is divided into three branches, which bear the name Derix and refer to the founding date of 1866:

  • Hein Derix KG Kevelaer - workshops for glass painting, mosaic and restoration
  • Workshops for glass painting Derix Mosaik und Restaurierungen KG, Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth
  • Derix Glasstudios GmbH & Co. KG Taunusstein

The Hein Derix limited partnership, headed by Peter Derix and Werner Heymann, has existed in Kevelaer on the Lower Rhine since 1866. Furthermore, since 1941 one can find the workshops in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth , which are managed by Elisabeth Derix. Finally, Wilhelm Derix IV opened a glass painting in Rottweil in 1946, which moved to Taunusstein in 1974.

The Derix Glasstudios team comprises 70 employees. Young professionals are regularly trained and freelance artists are given the opportunity to benefit from the long-standing experience of the traditional company.

The workshop in Taunusstein is equipped, among other things, with two etching booths, two airbrushing booths, a sandblasting booth for free sandblasting, a sandblasting booth for flat sandblasting and gradients, as well as eight kilns (including what is probably the world's largest kiln).

Works

The most famous works by Derix Glasstudios include the central subway station Formosa Boulevard in Kaohsiung ( Taiwan ), the south window of Cologne Cathedral, the “Search” glass tower in Omaha (USA), a glass mural in the Max Planck Gymnasium in Karlsruhe , the HVB atrium in Oisterwijk ( Netherlands ), the interior facade of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, the “Ascent” glass tower in Lincoln (USA) and the Rockefeller Center in New York .

The glass dome of the Formosa Boulevard underground station was made by the Italian artist Narzissus Quagliata as lead glazing, consisting of 1152 individual fields. It has a diameter of around 30 m and represents the history of the universe. At the same time, the "Dome of Light" is intended to commemorate the shocking birth of Taiwanese democracy and humanity in general. The glass subway station is the largest glass work in the world. The artist worked four and a half years to complete his work. The four entrances to the station were designed by the Japanese architect Shin Takamatsu .

The south window of Cologne Cathedral was created by the world-famous artist Gerhard Richter . Around 11,263 color squares in 72 different colors were arranged on the window area of 106 square meters. However, the window divides opinion. In addition to a lot of enthusiasm, the window also received a lot of criticism. The handcrafted execution of the window was carried out by Derix Glasstudios.

The “Search” glass tower in Omaha , built by the artist Jun Kaneko, is at the center of a large traffic circle in front of the Fred & Pamela Buffet Cancer Center. The work was financed through anonymous donations. The steel and glass construction has a height of 23 meters and a diameter of approx. 2 meters. The glass tower is illuminated from the inside and should have a clear reference to the cancer clinic. The artist wanted to create a positive work of art with a universal effect for all the people who work in the clinic and of course the patients and their families who come to the clinic for treatment. Omaha is also the artist's place of residence. The tower was completed in May 2017.

The luminous glass mural “Saat” in the Max Planck High School by the artist Margit Abele is 150 × 400 × 30 cm in size and is dedicated to committed teachers and courageous students. The inspiration for the work came from the founder of quantum physics, who also bears the name of the grammar school, Max Planck. On the glass wall, several circling protoplasms are shown on a black background, which in their shape and appearance are reminiscent of planets.

In the atrium in Oisterwijk (Netherlands), the 2.70 meter glass pane forms the centerpiece. The disc was designed by the artist Ellen Brouwer. It hangs on steel cables in the atrium and 80 different colored glass balls float above it.

At the new European Central Bank (EZB) in Frankfurt, the interior facade was made by the artist Frank Stepper in collaboration with Derix Glasstudios.

The "Ascent" glass tower is located in Lincoln, Nebraska (USA). This 16 m high tower has a diameter of 2.3 m and consists of 80 hand-blown glass panes from Lamberts. The tower was designed by the artist Jun Kaneko, while Derix took care of the statics, the steel, the lighting design and the glass art of the tower. This tower is also illuminated from the inside. Installation took place in spring 2017 within just 10 days.

Finally, in New York (USA) in the well-known Rockefeller Center , you will find a plastic, crystalline geode wall called "Radiance" by the artist Michael Hammers. He designed this work in 2005 with the support of Derix Glasstudios.
