Gabriele Münter Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gabriele Münter Prize is an art prize named after the painter Gabriele Münter . It is considered the most prestigious award for female visual artists in the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the first art prize in Europe that is aimed at female visual artists over forty years of age.

Sponsorship and history

The prize is awarded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth in cooperation with the Federal Association of Visual Artists , GEDOK and the Bonn Women's Museum . It is endowed with 20,000 euros and associated with a group exhibition. The exhibition was initially shown in the Bonn Women's Museum, later first in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin and then in Bonn. In 2017 the exhibition will take place in the Berlin Academy of the Arts (Berlin) and then in Bonn. The exhibition is documented in an extensive catalog.

It is the first art prize in Europe that is aimed at professional visual artists over forty years of age. This limitation was chosen because women of this age group are clearly underrepresented at high-end prices.

In 2012, the minister responsible at the time, Kristina Schröder, initially suspended and then canceled funding. This created an unusually large gap in the award of the prize, which is generally awarded every three years.
