GrenzGebietRuhr is a network project within the framework of RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture , in which twelve art associations and two artists' houses in the Ruhr area came together to jointly develop a project that reflects the topic of "borders" both in closed exhibition spaces and in public spaces.

concept

The project aims to make the metropolitan area Ruhr with its 53 cities, three administrative districts and two landscape associations tangible as a complex living space with special aesthetic, social, cultural and historical qualities. The project pays particular attention to the representation of refraction, blurring and what is hidden beneath the surface of the visible. The projects approach the topic from different directions and develop different narrative strands that, taken together, are intended to reflect the identity of the Ruhr area as a living space.

“GrenzGebietRuhr” traces the boundaries of regional macro and microstructures and looks at borderline situations of the urban . The processes of border-drawing and border-shifting are observed and reflected in different contributions. Each contribution has its own artistic, historical or sociological background in order to make life-defining phenomena in the Ruhr Metropolis legible. From the sum of the different contributions, a new image of the region is to emerge, which is shaped by the nature of urbanity and change and, with its many facets, contributes to a genuine image of the Ruhr Metropolis.
