Gary Charles (born April 13, 1970 in London ) is a former English football player .

Career

Nottingham Forest (1987-1993)

The 18-year-old Gary Charles made his debut in the Football League First Division in 1988/89 for Nottingham Forest . From March to May 1989 he played on loan for the second division Leicester City and played eight league games. After another season with only one league game for Forest, Charles came in the second half of the First Division 1990/91 ten times for Nottingham. The table eighth moved into the final of the FA Cup 1990/91 thanks to a 4-0 in the semifinals over West Ham United . Charles, already used in this game, was preferred to the more experienced Brian Laws by coach Brian Clough in the final and played over the full distance. Forest lost the game, however, 2-1 after extra time against Tottenham Hotspur and thus missed the first title in this competition since 1959. At the beginning of the game, Charles was violently fouled by Tottenham star Paul Gascoigne . The subsequent free kick gave Stuart Pearce the lead and Gascoigne had to leave the field injured. The 1991/92 season completed Gary Charles as a regular player and moved into his second final in the 1991/92 League Cup . Forest faced Manchester United in the final and lost the game 1-0 to an early goal from Brian McClair . In the course of the Premier League 1992/93 Brian Clough again increasingly relied on Brian Laws as right defender and Gary Charles played only fourteen league games. Forest rose at the end of the season from the first division and Charles left the club.

Derby County (1993–1995)

On July 29, 1993, he moved for £ 750,000 to the second division Derby County and played the 1993/94 season as a regular (43 league games / 1 goal). Derby finished the season in sixth and missed promotion in the subsequent play-offs. Gary Charles was named Second Division PFA Team of the Year at the end of the season . After another eighteen appearances in the first half of the 1994/95 season, he moved to the first division club Aston Villa on January 6, 1995 for £ 1,450,000 .

Aston Villa (1995-1999)

With his new team, Charles (16 games) just reached relegation in eighteenth place. The team acted significantly better with him as a regular in the 1995/96 Premier League as fourth in the table. This success was increased by winning the 1995/96 League Cup . Villa defeated Leeds United 3-0 in the final , winning this competition for the fifth time. The following season 1996/97 missed Charles completely due to injury. After another 1½ years and twenty-nine league games, he moved to Benfica Lisbon on January 14, 1999 .

Benfica Lisbon (1999)

Benfica has been looked after by the Scottish coach Graeme Souness since 1997 , who previously u. a. Michael Thomas , Mark Pembridge and Dean Saunders from the island. Benfica ended the 1998/99 season only in third place behind FC Porto and Boavista Porto and parted ways with Souness in the first half of the Primeira Liga 1999/2000 . This also ended the stay in Portugal for Gary Charles and the other British players.

Charles then moved to West Ham United , but was injured only in five league games until June 2002 before he had to end his career early.

English national team (1991)

On June 8, 1991, 21-year-old Gary Charles made his debut in the English national team in a 2-0 win in New Zealand. Four days later he played his second international game in a 4-2 win in Malaysia. After the international tour in Oceania and Asia, coach Graham Taylor relied on Lee Dixon as right defender and Gary Charles did not play another international match.
