Gary Vincent Mabbutt MBE (born August 23, 1961 in Bristol ) is a former English football player. Despite suffering from diabetes , he played over 600 league games in English professional football and won the UEFA Cup with Tottenham Hotspur in 1984 and the FA Cup seven years later .

Career

Mabbutt began his professional career in his hometown with the Bristol Rovers . Although he was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 17, he made a name for himself there as a versatile player; He did not have a regular position at that time, although he mostly acted as a central defender or defensive midfielder . For a comparatively small transfer fee of £ 120,000, Mabbutt hired Tottenham Hotspur in July 1982, which had recently won the English Cup.

On his first appearance in the Charity Shield game against Liverpool FC , he made a very present impression in midfield at Wembley Stadium and thus gave a foretaste of his leadership qualities, which the "Spurs" could build on over the next 16 years . Despite his good performances in this position, he made his debut on October 13, 1982 against Germany (1: 2) for the English senior team as a right full-back and in London he steadily grew into the role of the "all-rounder" who filled the gaps, who left injured players. In 1984 he won the UEFA Cup with his team and after Paul Miller's injury he established himself as a “permanent solution” in the defense headquarters. After Miller's return he played a few games in midfield again, but after the end of the 1985/86 season, the new coach David Pleat ordered him alongside Richard Gough in central defense. Together, the newly formed team reached the FA Cup final against Coventry City in 1987 . There Mabbutt scored the intermittent 2-1 lead, but was then responsible for the final score of 2-3 in the 96th minute with an own goal - a Coventry City fan magazine called "Gary Mabbutt's Knee" still remembers this today Fact.

After Gough left for the Scottish homeland, Mabbutt grew in his role as head of defense and team captain and compensated for his comparatively small size with good positional play and timing. He consistently refused offers from other clubs and in 1991 his loyalty was rewarded with another entry into the English cup final. Four years after his personal disappointment, he led the team against Nottingham Forest as captain on the field and took the trophy personally after the 2-1 victory. Mabbutt played at the highest level for a good two years and after a four-year break he helped out again in the English national team, when they fought against Turkey and Poland in autumn 1991 for a successful qualification for the upcoming 1992 European Championship . After a 16th and final appearance for England's senior team against the Czech Republic on February 25, 1992, Mabbutt's career with the "Three Lions" ended.

In November 1993, after a tough elbow check by Justin Fashanu , Mabbutt broke his cheekbones and fell out for three months. Another serious injury befell him at the beginning of the 1996/97 season when he broke his leg with the Blackburn Rovers and had to take a full year off. Mabbutt returned one last time in sport, but when the club decided to end the engagement in May 1998, the veteran player announced his resignation in January 1999 due to persistent knee problems.

After his active career, Mabbutt got involved with the public in a variety of ways. In addition to his fight against diabetes, he is a volunteer ambassador for the Football Association and a construction worker for Afghan football.
