David John Pleat (born January 15, 1945 in Nottingham ) is a former English football player and coach who is now a sports commentator.
Career
Pleat began his playing career in 1962 with local club Nottingham Forest . Before that, he had already played a number of international appearances in the youth teams of the English national football team . After only six appearances for Forest, he was signed by Luton Town for a transfer fee of £ 8,000, later he also played for Shrewsbury Town , Exeter City and finally Peterborough United .
At the age of 26, Pleat began working as a player- coach at Nuneaton Borough, who were then playing in the Southern Football League , before returning to his former club, Luton Town, as a youth coach. In 1978, Pleat became the club's manager after his predecessor Harry Haslam left the club. In the first year of his managerial activity Luton fought against relegation to what was then the Third Division , in the years that followed they were title contenders in the Second Division , which they won in 1981/82. In the 1982/83 season, Luton managed to stay in the top division on the last day of the game when they won 1-0 at their immediate rivals against relegation Manchester City by a goal from recently substituted Radomir Antić a few minutes before the final whistle. Pleat attracted national attention with his cheers on the pitch, both after Antić's goal and after the final whistle.
Pleat was able to establish Luton as a club in the former First Division from 1983 and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1985 .
1986 Pleat was obliged by Tottenham Hotspur as a manager and reached the FA Cup final there in 1987, but lost there with his club in extra time against Coventry City with 2-3. Pleat resigned from his personal life that same year over revelations.
Later coaching stations were Leicester City , again Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday , where he was released in November 1997 in the middle of the relegation battle.
In 1998, Pleat returned to Tottenham Hotspur as sporting director and took over as coach until the end of the season in 2003 after the dismissal of Glenn Hoddle .
Activities as a sports commentator
Between 2004 and 2012, Pleat wrote columns in The Guardian on a regular basis , mainly dealing with the tactical side of current Premier League or England football team games . He also wrote articles for the Daily Mail and worked as a TV commentator for ITV for many years , but left the TV station in August 2009.
