Bishop Auckland is a city in County Durham in north east England. It is 12 miles northwest of Darlington on the River Wear . Bishop Auckland has a population of 24,392 (2001). Bishop Auckland was the seat of the Bishop of Durham , so the city got its first name. The first mention of the place comes from the year 1020, when Canute the Great Bishop Auckland donated to the Bishop of Durham.
