Career as a player

Derby County

Steve Powell started his playing career in 1971 with the English club Derby County, for which his father had already been active. Powell made his debut at the age of 16 under the coaching duo Brian Clough and Peter Taylor . His team completed the season in the Football League First Division 1971/72 very successfully and secured the English championship title. In the following year Derby was thus eligible to start in the European Cup of National Champions 1972/73 and moved into the semifinals in this competition. Only then did the club fail against the Italian champions Juventus Turin . His sponsor Brian Clough was dismissed after this season in a dispute with the board, but Powell was also able to assert himself in the team under his successor Dave Mackay . In the 1973/74 season Derby reached a good fourth place in the table and was able to increase this position again in the following year. It was followed by the second championship title after 1972 in the Football League First Division 1974/75 . Participation in the 1975/76 European Cup ended this time in the second round. After a 4-1 home win, Derby County failed in the second leg 5-1 after extra time against Spanish champions Real Madrid . After a fourth place in the championship 1975/76, County started in the UEFA Cup 1976/77 , but failed here in the second round at AEK Athens .

After the rankings in the championship deteriorated in the following three years, Powell rose with his team in the Football League First Division 1979/80 from the first division. The club missed a direct return to the First Division and even rose in the 1983/84 season in the third division. After a failed promotion the following year, Powell ended his playing career in 1985 at the age of only 30.

In the 1990/91 season he coached the lower class club Burton Albion .
