Rachmiel Merkel (* 1843 ; † June 4, 1907 in Lemberg ), his first name sometimes also written Rachmil , was the founder and owner of the important furniture store R. Merkel during the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy in Lemberg.

Rachmiel Merkel founded his company in 1868, the address was at ul. Trybunalska 8 (today Schewska wulyzja (Шевська вулиця)). He was a merchant and soon made great fortune and was able to own real estates. He married Rosa geb. Weinreb and together they had four children: Hermann, who was later married to Salomea Merkel; Adolf, who was married to Karolina Merkel; Friederika, who married a Philipp Finsterbusch, and Klara, who was Dr. Solomon had Handel as a husband. More grandchildren emerged from these marriages.

The customers were among the highest in the entire monarchy. On August 27, 1891, the Archduke Leopold Salvator of Austria-Tuscany paid a visit to the furniture store. It was primarily thanks to the initiative of the company boss Rachmiel Merkel, his personal suggestions and his commercial prowess, that he received the award of an imperial and royal purveyor in recognition of his many services in the field of arts and crafts .

Rachmiel Merkel died after a long illness at the age of 64. His son Adolf Merkel took over the business and was able to successfully expand it.

The company had to struggle under the First World War and the collapse of the monarchy, as part of the sales market collapsed. During World War II the family Merkel due to their Jewish heritage was victim of the Holocaust and were either expelled or killed, the company was probably arisiert and consisted at the latest after the end of World War no more.
