George Friend (born October 19, 1987 in Barnstaple ) is an English football player . The left full-back , who can also be used in midfield or central defense , was trained at the lower-class Exeter City , where he was instrumental in the promotion to Football League Two and has been under contract with Middlesbrough FC since the beginning of the 2012/13 season .
Athletic career
In the county of Devon -born George Friend began his career in the youth section of Exeter City , an English traditional club which at that time outside the professional football of the Football League played. In March 2006 he signed his first contract there, after he had previously made his first experiences in the senior sector at the beginning of the 2005/06 season at Tiverton Town - an also underclass club in Devon. On April 17, 2006, he made his debut in the goalless draw for Exeter City against the Forest Green Rovers in the Football Conference .
Before his career started in the 2007/08 season, he went through other loan periods with Team Bath in December 2006 and Folkestone Invicta. At the "Grecians" in Exeter, the left-back Friend was one of the key players in the team, who managed to return to the professional game of the Football League at the end of the season with a 1-0 play-off final win over Cambridge United at Wembley Stadium . Friend made a name for himself in the fifth highest English league with his head ball strength, good crosses and technical skills, which occasionally led him to a phlegmatic style of play.
Friend completed four championship games for Exeter City at the beginning of the 2008/09 season before moving to the second division side Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 1, 2008 . He had already been under surveillance for a longer period of time with the "Wolves" and the positive judgment from Andrew Cassidy from the scouting department prompted coach Mick McCarthy to equip the young player with a two-year contract - plus an option for an additional year. An amount of £ 350,000 was negotiated as the transfer fee, with a success-related increase to a possible £ 500,000.
The breakthrough in the professional team of the Wolves was still denied Friend in the 2008/09 promotion season. He was on the field in seven competitive games and at the beginning of the 2009/10 season the club management let him move to the two third division teams Millwall and Southend United and later to the second division Scunthorpe United for one month each . With the exception of a "surprise appearance" at Manchester United , when coach McCarthy spared his top-performing team, Friend ran for the Wolves in no further game. Rather, he helped his ex-club Exeter City, which had now been promoted to the third division, in the relegation battle from March 2010 and made it successful. At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Friend then signed a new two-year contract with second division Doncaster Rovers .
