Hanjörg Just

Hanjörg Just (born November 14, 1933 in Stapelburg ) is a German medic. From 1978 to 1999 he was medical director of the Medical Clinic III (angiology and cardiology) at the University of Freiburg .

Career

Just studied medicine at the Universities of Göttingen, Cologne, Bern and Freiburg. He received his doctorate in Freiburg in 1961 and subsequently trained as a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology at Georgetown University Washington, the National Institute of Health (Bethesda) and the Mainz University Medical Center. In 1970 he completed his habilitation in internal medicine. In 1973 he accepted an appointment as associate professor at the University of Freiburg and in 1978 took over the chair for internal medicine (focus on cardiology and angiology). As Medical Director he headed Department III of the Medical University Clinic until his retirement in 1999.

The focus of his work was on the elucidation of endothelial dysfunction of the heart and the development of angiocardiography. These procedures are still the basis of diagnosis and therapy today. The founding of the Cardiovascular Center and the Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology at the Freiburg University Hospital go back to his initiative.

In 1996 he founded the public ethics committee at the University of Freiburg as the successor to the "Commission for Voluntary Self-Control in Human Experiments", which has existed since 1981, and which advises scientists on research projects involving humans. Just was its chairman from 1996 to 2009.

He is the author and editor of numerous scientific publications and books, a member of many medical societies and the recipient of numerous national and international awards.
