Kai Herdling (born June 27, 1984 in Heidelberg ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach . The striker was under contract with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim from 2002 to 2016, with two brief interruptions .

Career as a player

Herdling played in his youth for SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim and SpVgg Neckarsteinach . At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the Regionalliga Süd . From the 2005/06 season onwards, Kai Herdling only played for the second TSG Hoffenheim team playing in the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga and was top scorer in the 2006/07 season with 26 goals. Through his four appearances in the first team, he was involved in the Hoffenheim regional league runner-up in 2007 and the associated promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga .

Herdling played his first second division game on March 28, 2008 in a 2-0 win against FC Augsburg . He scored his first goal in the 2nd Bundesliga on April 13, 2008, when he scored the only Hoffenheim goal in their 2-1 defeat by Alemannia Aachen .

In the round of 16 and in the third round of the 2003/04 DFB Cup, Herdling shot TSG Hoffenheim into the quarter-finals when they scored 3-2 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

Kai Herdling moved to the regional league team SV Waldhof Mannheim at the beginning of the 2008/09 season , but went back to Hoffenheim for the second half of the season . Herdling was mostly used by the second team in the major league, which he scored in the 2009/10 season with 17 goals in 33 games for promotion to the regional league. He received his first Bundesliga appearance in the professional squad of Hoffenheim on March 7, 2010 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 .

On April 16, 2012, Herdling moved to the US MLS team Philadelphia Union on loan until June 2012 with the option of an extension until December 31, 2012 , where he made his debut against San José Earthquakes . After coach Piotr Nowak was dismissed , Herdling decided to return.

For the 2013/14 season , Herdling was promoted to the first team by coach Markus Gisdol at the age of 30 . In the first competitive game of the season in the DFB Cup against SG Aumund-Vegesack , he scored a brace after being substituted on.

Due to good performances in the Hinserie of the 2013/14 season, his contract was extended early on January 29, 2014 to June 30, 2016. Herdling ended his active career after the 2015/16 season.

Career as a coach

Herdling was Frank Fröhling's assistant coach for the C1 juniors (U15) at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim during his playing career . He held this position from the 2009/10 season until he moved to the USA in spring 2012.

After the end of his career, Herdling became co-trainer of Marco Wildersinn alongside Andreas Ibertsberger for the second TSG team, which played in the fourth-class Regionalliga Südwest , for the 2016/17 season . After two seasons, he took over the B2 Juniors (U16) as head coach for the 2018/19 season .

After the season 2019/20 in the youth field due to the COVID-19 pandemic had been canceled, took Herdling together with the previous assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach and the U19 coach Marcel Rapp from 31 matchday of the season 2019/20 the Bundesliga team of Alfred Schreuder until the end of the season. The club described the transitional arrangement as a "team solution", in which Kaltenbach was the official head coach. The coaching team won 3 of the last 4 games and finished the season in 6th place, which qualified them directly for the Europa League .

For the 2020/21 season , Herdling took over the B1 Juniors (U17) who play in the B Juniors Bundesliga .
