Matthias Kaltenbach (born March 3, 1985 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German football coach .

Career

After Kaltenbach had worked in Alfons Higl's football school , he became his assistant coach for the A-Juniors (U19) of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , who played in the A-Juniors Bundesliga , for the 2011/12 season at the age of 26 . After the almost relegation, Thomas Krücken took over the U19 for the 2012/13 season , and Kaltenbach assisted from then on. For the 2013/14 season , Julian Nagelsmann became the new head coach with whom Kaltenbach became German A-Junior Champion . In the 2014/15 season Nagelsmann and Kaltenbach led the team again to win the South / Southwest relay, but failed in the final at FC Schalke 04 . After Nagelsmann took over the professional team in February 2016, Kaltenbach became the head coach of the U19s. He was again champion of the season south / south-west with the team in the 2015/16 season, but failed in the final at Borussia Dortmund .

For the 2016/17 season he became Nagelsmann's assistant coach for the Bundesliga team . Kaltenbach assisted him for three seasons and for the 2019/20 season became assistant coach of Nagelsmann's successor Alfred Schreuder , who had also been his assistant until 2017.

After the club had separated from Schreuder, Kaltenbach took over the Bundesliga team on June 9, 2020 together with U19 coach Marcel Rapp and U16 coach Kai Herdling , which was in 7th place with 43 points after the 30th match day, temporarily until the end of the season. The association described the transitional arrangement as a "team solution". Although Rapp was the only one with a football instructor license , the official head coach was Kaltenbach. The coaching team won 3 of the last 4 games and finished the season in 6th place, which qualified them directly for the Europa League .
