The SC Wiedenbrück (full name: Sport-Club Wiedenbrück e.V. , until April 22, 2015: Sport-Club Wiedenbrück 2000 e.V.) is a sports club from the East Westphalian town of Rheda-Wiedenbrück in the Gütersloh district . The association, founded in 2000, has 960 members (as of December 31, 2016) and the association colors are black and blue.

The first soccer team played from 2010 to 2019 and since 2020 in the fourth-class Regionalliga West . The venue is the Jahnstadion . In addition to football, the club also offers table tennis , gymnastics and dancing . A cycling department also existed until 2013 .

history

The parent clubs

The SC Wiedenbrück 2000 was created in 2000 through the merger of the two parent clubs DJK Eintracht Wiedenbrück and Westfalia Wiedenbrück . Both clubs had previously only played at the local level. The Westfalia played in the 1934/35 season in the then second-rate district league Ostwestfalen. In 1955, Westfalia made it into the then fourth-class state league , but missed qualification for the Association League Westphalia, which was introduced a year later . A year later, the Westfalia rose from the state league. In 1968, 1970 and 1975 she missed promotion to the regional league as the district league champions behind SpVg Heepen , SC Verl and the second team of DJK Gütersloh .

In 1993 the DJK Eintracht made the leap into supra-district football and played first in the district league season 9, then from 1995 in the district league season 2. After advancing to the state league in 1998, she made the leap into the association league two years later. The two clubs finally merged, into which the DJK Eintracht brought an ambitious team and SV Westfalia, who played in the district league A, brought many youth teams. From the club colors of the merger clubs DJK (yellow-black) and Westfalia (yellow-blue), the new club colors blue and black were selected for the new club.

The first years after the merger (2000 to 2010)

After the merger, the team took over the right to start in the association league from the DJK. Right away, the Wiedenbrückers reached third place, which the team achieved again two years later. In the 2004/05 season, the SCW had to relegate to the national league after an exciting final game day. The SpVgg Vreden , the SC Wiedenbrück and SC Herford reported at the end of each season to 32 points. The Vredener had the best goal difference of this trio and thus managed to stay in the league.

Under the new coach Jürgen Gessat, the immediate rise was initially successful. The team stayed in the upper third of the table and finally became runner-up behind SV Schermbeck . A precautionary set decision game against the vice-champion of the association league season II Germania Gladbeck was canceled because the SC Verl was promoted to the regional league and no Westphalian club was relegated from the regional league. As a result, Wiedenbrück and Gladbeck were both able to move up to the Oberliga Westfalen .

However, the leap into the top division turned out to be too big. Coach Gessat was replaced in October 2007 by Dieter Brei , who, however, could not prevent the Wiedenbrücker from finishing the season only as the penultimate. With the introduction of the 3rd soccer league and the dissolution of the Oberliga Westfalen in favor of the NRW-Liga , the Wiedenbrückers slipped two divisions into the sixth-class association league, which has been known as the Westfalenliga since 2008 .

With the former professional Thomas Stratos a new coach was signed for the 2008/09 season. The Wiedenbrücker team started with 13 wins in a row and finally reached the championship and promotion to the NRW League with 28 points ahead of second-placed FC Eintracht Rheine . Striker Murat Turham, who was top scorer in the Westphalia League with 28 goals, played a major role in the success ; Second was Soner Dayangan, who scored 25 goals, also a Wiedenbrücker.

Thomas Stratos' team continued there successfully. Thanks to a strong second half of the season, in which the team remained unbeaten for 14 games, the SCW became champions at the end of the season with four points ahead of Arminia Bielefeld's second team . With that, the Wiedenbrücker made it through to the regional league. Striker Dominik Jansen was the top scorer in the league with 23 goals.

During the season, the board of SC Wiedenbrück negotiated with that of FC Gütersloh 2000 about a merger of the two clubs. The background was the possible conditions of the DFB for the stadium in the event of a regional league promotion. The Gütersloh Heidewaldstadion was discussed as the venue . However, the merger talks were broken off by the Wiedenbrücker side. Both clubs wanted to go into the merger free of debt, which Gütersloh could not ensure.

In the regional league (2010 to 2019)

With a 2-1 semi-final win at SuS Langscheid / Enkhausen , the Wiedenbrückers reached the final of the Westphalia Cup for the first time in 2011 and thus qualified for the first main round of the DFB Cup . On July 17, 2011 they defeated the NRW league club Rot Weiss Ahlen 3-1 in the final and won the Westphalia Cup . With a tenth place, the team secured relegation. Robert Mainka was the top scorer with 18 goals . In the first round of the 2011/12 DFB Cup, the Wiedenbrückers were eliminated 3-0 against 1. FC Köln . The game took place in Gütersloh's Heidewald Stadium.

During the regional league season 2012/13 , the Wiedenbrücker initially found themselves in the table cellar. In November 2012, coach Markus Reiter was dismissed and replaced by Theo Schneider . Schneider led the team to 9th place and into the final of the Westphalia Cup, which was lost 3-1 to Arminia Bielefeld. Nevertheless, the Wiedenbrücker qualified for the DFB-Pokal 2013/14 , in which they prevailed 1-0 in the first round against the Bundesliga relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf . Marwin Studtrucker scored the winning goal in stoppage time with a penalty kick in front of 4,500 spectators in Gütersloh's Heidewaldstadion. In the second round, the end followed after a 1: 3 against SV Sandhausen . Sebastian Sumelka had initially put the Wiedenbrücker in the lead.

While the Wiedenbrückers made people sit up and take notice in the cup, the team was less successful in the championship, also due to many injuries. Apart from the first game day, the SCW was permanently on a relegation zone. On April 8, 2014, coach Schneider was given leave of absence. As player- coach, Dominik Jansen took on responsibility for the remaining seven games in which the Wiedenbrücker team remained unbeaten. With a 2-1 win at their direct competitor SV Lippstadt 08 , the SCW managed to stay in the league. The team benefited from the withdrawal of the second team from Bayer 04 Leverkusen and the relegation of Arminia Bielefeld from the 2nd Bundesliga , which meant that Arminia’s second team was not allowed to advance to the regional league despite their athletic qualifications.

Alfons Beckstedde took over the coaching position in the summer of 2015. Under his leadership, the defense in the first half of the season in particular was greatly improved, so that the Wiedenbrückers wintered in fifth place. Bad luck with injuries caused the team to slip to twelfth place. In the 2016/17 season it was only enough for 14th place. At the end of the season, coach Beckstedde left the club. Under his successor Björn Mehnert , the Wiedenbrücker played in the top third of the table for a long time in the 2017/18 season . Two defeats at the end of the season against SC Verl and the champions KFC Uerdingen 05 let the Wiedenbrücker slip to seventh place. The departure of some top performers and bad luck with injuries led to relegation from the regional league in the 2018/19 season . The final of the Westfalenpokal 2019 was lost against SV Rödinghausen with 1: 2.

Present (since 2019)

Even if the club went into the winter break of the 2019/20 league season as the league leader , the club split from coach Björn Mehnert on January 6, 2020. The reason for this was "irreversible, negative tendencies in the team". The successor took over the previous player Daniel Brinkmann . Despite leading the table, the club initially waived a possible return to the regional league. The reasons given were "declining audience numbers, the modest atmosphere in the stadium and the lack of support from citizens and businesses". Ten days later, the announcement was revoked after “well-known people” agreed to join the association's board and take responsibility.

The season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . As the leader of the quotient table, he was able to return directly to the regional league. In addition, the Wiedenbrückers qualified for the DFB Cup 2020/21 after a 4-0 win in the decider against SV Rödinghausen .

In addition to the regional league team, SC Wiedenbrück has another men's team. The second team has been playing in the district league since its promotion in 2003. Since 2016, the Wiedenbrücker have a third team playing in the district league C. There are also a total of 26 youth teams, two of which are girls' teams. In the 2020/21 season, the A and B youth will compete in the third-class regional league and the C-youth in the second-class Westphalia league.

The C-youth achieved their greatest success in the youth field in 2015, when they were promoted to the first-class Regionalliga West after a 3-1 win after extra time against VfB Waltrop . There the Wiedenbrückers had no chance and had to accept the direct relegation early on. In 2014 the C-youth won the Futsal Cup of the West German Football and Athletics Association with a 2-1 final victory over Borussia Dortmund . This qualified the team for the DFB Futsal Cup of the C-Juniors, in which they only finished last.

The women's team rose to the fourth-class Westfalenliga in 2018 . The biggest success of the SCW women was the runner-up in the association league in 2006 behind the second team of FC Gütersloh 2000 . In 2018 and 2019, the women from Wiedenbrück won the district cup. Since 2015 there has been a second women's team that competes in the district league. Lisanne Gräwe became European champion with the U-17 national team in 2019 .

The Jahnstadion

The SC Wiedenbrück plays its home games of the first men's and women's teams in the city's Jahnstadion . The stadium was opened in 1950 and expanded between 2003 and 2006 with a seating and standing stand. The capacity is 2,550 places. The club also has an artificial turf pitch next to the Jahn Stadium at the riding arena. The youth department mainly uses the Burg Sports Center, where two grass pitches and one artificial turf pitch are available.

Rivalries

The supporters of SC Wiedenbrück cultivate a rivalry with SC Verl. It is about the sporting supremacy in the Gütersloh district. Verl's coach Andreas Golombek compared the rivalry in 2014 with a mini version of the Revierderby between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 . The games against the other East Westphalian regional league club SV Rödinghausen are referred to by the Wiedenbrücker side as "small Ostwestfalenderby".

Table tennis

The table tennis players of the parent club Westfalia Wiedenbrück experienced their most successful period in the 1950s. The department was founded in the late 1940s. In 1952, the team rose to the Oberliga West and played a total of four years first class. In the 1980s, the team reached the association league again. The first table tennis team of SC Wiedenbrück is currently playing in the district league.

Cycling

Between 2009 and 2013, the SCW2000 cycling team, headed by Holger Sievers, was part of the club; it succeeded the Continental Team 3C Group . Drivers like Björn Papstein and Felix Schäfermeier competed for the team . The department was dissolved in 2013 because the club had not succeeded in getting enough young local athletes interested in cycling.
