The NRW League was one of the ten major leagues that make up the fifth highest division in German men's football. The league comprised 18 clubs from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , which played for promotion to the regional league or against relegation to the association league. The league started playing on August 15, 2008 and replaced the upper leagues of North Rhine and Westphalia . The last champion was FC Viktoria Köln . After the 2011/12 season, the league was dissolved again.

The 2007/08 season was set as a binding qualification period. The economic and technical-organizational admission requirements were laid down in a "NRW League Statute" by the WFLV Presidium, which was responsible for this division. The following clubs qualified for the first season:

Promotion and relegation regulation

2008 to 2011

  • Places one and two qualify for promotion to the Regionalliga West .
  • At least the teams from rank 17 were relegated, ie with 18 or 19 participants there were at least two or three relegated teams. However, the number of relegated teams was also increased by the number of clubs relegated from the Regionalliga West . Since up to three clubs were relegated from the regional league, this could lead to a maximum of five relegated teams from the NRW league with 18 participating teams.
  • The four champions of the following leagues were eligible for promotion to the NRW League: Westphalia (2 seasons), Middle Rhine and Lower Rhine . If an applicant from a playgroup were not admitted, the next team eligible for promotion in the respective division would qualify in its place, provided that it met the admission requirements.
  • As a rule, 18 teams took part in the NRW League.

2011/12

At the end of the 2011/12 season, the NRW League was dissolved (decision of the WFLV advisory board of May 17, 2011).

  • For promotion to the Regionalliga West , the clubs / teams were able to qualify in places one to three in the 2011/12 final table.
  • The clubs / teams in places four to seven of the final table 2011/12 of the NRW League and the athletically qualified champions of the association leagues (one each from the football associations Middle Rhine and Lower Rhine and two from the football and athletics association Westphalia) determined in a qualifying round / Relegation round another four promoted.
  • The inferior clubs / teams from the games of the promotion / relegation round were assigned to the corresponding divisions of the regional associations.
