Athletic career

From youngsters to the GDR league

Before Enge was active in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association , he had already passed through a large number of sports communities. He started at the age of five with the children's team of the company sports association (BSG) of the Berlin transport company . At the age of ten he was delegated to the youth department of 1. FC Union Berlin, where he played until 1981. The next station was the BSG EAB 47 Berlin , where he was first used in the junior team, from 1983 in the men's team in the second-rate GDR league . In 1984 he was relegated to the district league with EAB , and in November of the same year he was drafted into army service. During these one and a half years, Enge played football for the Vorwärts Bernau army sports community. After his discharge from the army, Enge returned to EAB 47 in May 1986 and continued to play in the district league until the summer of 1987. With 23 goals he was the top scorer of the district league in the 1986/87 season. This caused the GDR league club BSG Rotation Berlin to bring the striker into their own ranks. After he had already scored five championship goals there by November 1987, the first division club 1. FC Union Berlin took notice of the 22-year-old and in turn caused the 1.84 m striker to switch to his own team.

Player of 1. FC Union Berlin

Already on November 28, 1987, Enge made his first appearance for Union in the cup match between FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and 1. FC Union (1-0). A week later he made his debut in the league, and in his second league game on December 12, 1987, with his first goal for Union in the 84th minute, he saved a draw for his team in the home game against FC Karl-Marx-Stadt . Nevertheless, Enge did not succeed in asserting himself as a regular player. Although he played 15 league games by the end of the season, he was only eight times in the starting eleven and only played seven games over the full game. With his four championship goals, he was the Unioner's third best scorer. In his status as a supplementary player changed nothing in the league season 1988/89. In his 19 appearances in 26 games played in the league, he was in the starting eleven 13 times, but only played ten times for 90 minutes. With only one goal, his goal yield was unsatisfactory. At the end of the 1988/89 season, Enge rose with Union in the GDR league. For the second division season 1989/90 he was nominated again for the first team, but played only ten out of 34 point games and had to play most of the time with the second team in the fourth class district class. When the first team had missed the return to the league, they played in 1990/91 in the second division, now in the NOFV league . After Enge had been used only five times in the league team in the first half series and had fallen out with the club management, he retired from 1. FC Union in late 1990. In his four seasons at Union he had played 55 competitive games with 15 goals for the 1st team, including 34 encounters as a striker in the GDR Oberliga, in which he scored five goals. For the rest of the season, Enge played for league rivals Motor Eberswalde .

Subsequently, Enge was active in various clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1991 to 1995 he played for FC Gütersloh , with whom he was promoted to the Oberliga Westfalen in 1992 and in 1995 to the third-class Regionalliga West / Südwest . The next stop was SpVg Beckum , where Enge played again in the Oberliga Westfalen until 1997. In 1997 he moved back to the Regionalliga West / Südwest for SC Paderborn 07 until relegation in 2000. Enge ended his career as a soccer player at TSV Victoria Clarholz , where he was active from 2000 to 2003.
