About this picture

Wernau (Neckar) is a town in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg . It belongs to the Stuttgart region (until 1992 the Middle Neckar region ) and the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart .

geography

Geographical location

Wernau is located on the right bank of the Neckar , south of Plochingen and about 25 km east of Stuttgart . The Bodenbach flows through the city towards the Neckar. As early as 1818, its natural dynamism was ended by the creation of a deep, artificial river bed. The subsequent filling of the Neckar oxbow lakes began in 1820 and was carried out successively in several steps. Gravel extraction, which initially proceeded up the Neckar, reached the edge zones of today's quarry ponds (large and small lakes) as early as 1939. In 1981 the Wernau quarry ponds were declared a nature reserve. Today the area covers about 45 hectares. Another 5.5 hectare protected area in the city is the Wernau clay pit.

The hamlet Freitagshof, which belongs to Wernau, is located south-east between Wernau and Kirchheim unter Teck .

Neighboring communities

Adjacent municipalities are in turn the municipality of Deizisau in the northwest, the city of Plochingen in the north, the municipalities of Hochdorf in the east and Notzingen in the southeast, the cities of Kirchheim unter Teck in the south and Wendlingen in the southwest and the municipality of Köngen in the west, all of which are also in the Esslingen district lie.

history

Pfauhausen 1683, forest inventory book by Andreas Kieser
Steinbach 1683

Wernau emerged in 1938 from the places Pfauhausen and Steinbach.

Until the parish merger

In 1384 and 1681 attempts to form a community were given up after a short time. Pfauhausen belonged to the Neuhausen dominion in Upper Austria until 1769 , then to the Principality of Speyer until 1802 and was therefore always Catholic. Due to the local rule of Speth von Sulzburg, Steinbach also remained Catholic during the Reformation. As a result, both places were a Catholic enclave in the evangelical surrounding area of Württemberg . Pfauhausen and Steinbach came to the Oberamt Esslingen in 1808 when the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg was implemented . During the district reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era , the new municipality of Wernau became part of the Esslingen district in the year it was founded in 1938.

Post-war period in the 20th century

After the Second World War , the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the state of Württemberg-Baden , which became part of the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. In the post-war period, many expellees and refugees, especially from Hungary, came to Wernau. On April 1, 1968, the town was granted city rights.
