Guido
Guido [ ˈɡiːdo ], also South German [ ˈɡu̯iːdo ] is an Italian and German male given name .
Origin and meaning
The name arose in the Romance languages in the course of the Great Migration from the Germanic name Withold . The Old High German word Wit (or Wid or Widu as in Widukind ) means forest, hold means as much as man or guy (i.e. a hold in old German).
Name day (catholic)
- March 31 or May 4 according to Guido von Pomposa , died March 31, 1046
- September 12th (after Guido von Anderlecht , Belgian sexton and pilgrim), also March 30th according to the Gregorian calendar .
Stereotype
In the USA, especially in the New York area, the name Guido has long been synonymous with young Italian-American men who were said to have a special macho attitude. The name also became a cliché for a style that was characterized by tight trousers, unbuttoned shirts, mustache and pomadized hairstyle. The name is now used more as a stereotype for male club visitors.
