Guido Leoni (born July 14, 1915 in Castellucchio (MN) , † May 6, 1951 in Ferrara ) was an Italian motorcycle racer .

Career

In the first season of the motorcycle world championship in 1949 , Guido Leoni competed in two races in the 500 cc class on a Moto Guzzi . He finished sixth at the Swiss and Belgian Grands Prix . In 1950 he won for the manufacturer from Mandello del Lario the title in the quarter liter class of the Italian road championship and the half liter victory in the long distance race Milano-Taranto .

From 1951 Guido Leoni started for FB Mondial , whose machines dominated the 125 cm³ category at the time. In April he was able to celebrate Italians at the opening Grand Prix of the season, the Spanish Grand Prix in Montjuïc, in front of his team-mate Carlo Ubbiali, his first victory in the motorcycle world championship.

Deadly accident

Guido Leoni crashed on May 6, the 1951 125cc race of belonging to the Italian championship race Circuito di Ferrara on the street circuit of Ferrara at a mass accident fatal. The accident was triggered by Antonio Ronchei, who hit the straw bales set up to secure the route in a fast left turn , fell and remained in the middle of the runway, which led to a pile-up . Guido Leoni drove his FB-Mondial into the rubble lying around, fell in the process and injured himself so badly that he died on the spot.

In addition to Leoni, his experienced teammate Raffaele Alberti was also killed in this accident .

Just two and a half months later, Moto Guzzi works drivers Gianni Leoni and Luigi Alberti had a fatal accident in a tragic accident during training for the Ulster Grand Prix . The drivers were not related or related by marriage.
