Guido von Avesnes († May 29, 1317 ) was bishop of Utrecht from 1301 to 1317 .

Life

Guido came from the north French noble family Avesnes . His parents were Count Johann I von Hennegau and Adelheid von Holland , a sister of the Roman-German King Wilhelm of Holland . His brothers were Burchard , Bishop of Metz and Wilhelm , Bishop of Cambrai .

Guido was elected bishop of Utrecht by the Utrecht canons in 1301 , while the cathedral chapter, which had fled to Deventer , chose Adolf von Waldeck . Pope Boniface VIII appointed Adolf Bishop of Liège , and in 1302 recognized Guido as Bishop of Utrecht. Guido supported the policy of his brother Johann , Count of Hainaut and Holland and his nephew Wilhelm of Hainaut and Holland against Flanders . In the course of the conflict, Guido was captured in 1304. The guilds used this to exert their influence in Utrechtto expand. The guild letter of 1304 regulated their participation in the city regiment. Guido returned from captivity in 1305, during his absence disputes between the Dutch and Frisian parties had broken out in the monastery, which he was only able to end after some time. He took part in the Council of Vienne , where he was offered the cardinal dignity , which he turned down. After his death in 1317 he was buried in Utrecht Cathedral, where his tombstone is still preserved today, albeit damaged.
