Guido von Cortona , actually Guido Pagnottelli (* 1187 in Cortona ; † 1247 ibid), was an Italian Franciscan and one of the first companions of St. Francis of Assisi . He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church ; his feast day is June 12th.

Life

Guido came from a wealthy Cortonese family. When Francis of Assisi came to the city on a preaching hike in 1211, Guido took him into his home and was infected by his enthusiasm. He sold his property in favor of poor relief and joined the young Franciscan movement. He received the vestments and settled with a small community in the hermitage of Le Celle near Cortona. After a period of preparation, he was ordained a priest . Francis held him in high regard and commissioned him to preach in Assisi as well. The two of them met for the last time in 1226 when Francis, terminally ill on the way from Siena to Assisi, stopped at Le Celle.

Adoration

Guido had a reputation for holiness during his lifetime . A biography written soon after his death reports numerous miracles. His relics are kept in the Cathedral of Cortona .
