Guido Kunze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guido Kunze (* 1965 in Mühlhausen ) is a Thuringian extreme athlete .

Kunze ran running with respectable results in his youth, but was finally no longer promoted by the GDR track and field system and switched to military all-round competition , judo (2nd Dan ), Jiu Jitsu (1st Dan), parachuting and orienteering . After reunification , he initially concentrated on martial arts and acquired the trainer's license for popular sports and judo at the Thuringian State Sports School in Bad Blankenburg . The surprisingly good result in an ultra marathon as part of the Rennsteig run in 1998, however, prompted him to turn to endurance sports. In 2005, the master car body and vehicle construction master stepped out of his previous car business and since then has been running a running shop together with his partner and future wife Gaby Laupichler, as this is more compatible with his growing sporting ambitions. In 2009 he cycled through Australia in 7 days, 19 hours and 15 minutes, driving the 4,000 km route from Perth to Sydney . In 2013 he set the world record for climbing escalators with 61,050 steps. In 2014 he set the (not yet confirmed) world altitude record by bike, starting from sea level in Bahía Inglesa and reaching an altitude of 6233 m on the Ojos del Salado . Here he covered a distance of 350 km and a cumulative altitude of almost 7000 m. The event was documented by Thomas Hillebrandt in the film The Chile Challenge - by bike on the highest volcano on earth . In 2015, he set another world record by climbing a total of 70,000 meters of altitude on mountain passes by bike within two weeks.

Kunze and his wife have two sons.
