Guido de Baysio
Guido de Baysio (also: de Abaysio; Archidiaconus ; * around 1250 in Reggio nell'Emilia ?; † 1313 in Avignon ) was a canonist , archdeacon of Bologna and functionary of the Roman Curia .
Life
Guido de Baysio studied canon law and civil law in Reggio. In 1271 he became a canon of Fogliano. After that he was himself a popular teacher in Reggio and from 1283 in Bologna (best known student: Johannes Andreae (legal scholar) ). He became archdeacon and canon of Reggio. In 1295 he was appointed cantor and canon of Chartres by Pope Boniface VIII , then was archdeacon at the cathedral and as such chancellor of the University of Bologna .
From 1297 to 1298 he is documented as a consultor in the Holy Office in Bologna. He was then already capellanus papae ( chaplain of the Pope ). In 1304 he was appointed auditor litterarum contradictarum by the Pope . As a high-ranking member of the papal chancellery, he became head of the Audientia litterarum contradictarum , which had to decide on those papal documents that had been objected to in a formalized procedure by those concerned in public audience ( audientia publica) . Since the Audientia was primarily concerned with judicial matters and delegation rescripts, as an auditor he was also one of the ordinary judges of the Roman Curia. He organized the relocation of his authority to Avignon and probably brought a copy of the Vulgate editorial of the Audientia formula book there. He was last attested in December 1312 as an auditor, on May 4, 1313 he was appointed Bishop of Reggio and therefore left the service of the Curia.
From now on he seems to have immersed himself completely in the curial works. He wrote several treatises, which are regarded as a treasure trove of decretistics of the 13th century, on heresy and other crimes; The conflict between Philip the Beautiful and the papacy can also be found in his works, as well as a text in which the plenitudo potestatis of the popes is emphasized.
