Guido I. (St. Pol)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guido von Châtillon (* after 1196; † August 1226 before Avignon ) was from 1219 as Guido I. Count of Saint-Pol and Auxerre , also lord of Montjay , Broigny and Crécy and by marriage lord of Donzy and Saint-Aignan . He was the eldest son of Walter III. of Châtillon († 1219) and Elizabeth of Saint-Pol († 1240).

When his father died in 1219, he inherited his lordships of Montjay and Broigny. He also took over the county of Saint-Pol from his mother.

In 1221 he married Agnes de Donzy († 1225), Countess of Nevers . She was the daughter and sole heir of her parents Hervé IV. De Donzy († 1223) ( Semur house ) and Mathilde von Courtenay († 1257). She brought her father's reigns, Donzy and Saint-Aignan, with her into the marriage. She also had inheritance claims to her mother's lands, namely the counties of Tonnerre , Auxerre and Nevers and the lords of Montmirail , Perche-Gouet and Cosne .

Guido had two children with Agnes:

In 1226 Guido took part in King Louis VIII's crusade against the Albigensians . He died in August during the siege of Avignon . Since his son Gaucher was still a minor at this time, Guido's brother Hugo I of Châtillon and Bar succeeded in taking over as Count of Saint-Pol and Gaucher had to deal with the dominions of Montjay, Broigny, Donzy and Saint-Aignan, as well the view of the counties Tonnerre, Auxerre and Nevers. Even Gaucher could not take over the inheritance in the three counties because his grandmother Mathilde survived him too. After Gaucher's death in 1250, the inheritance claims passed to Guido's daughter Jolanthe, who also died before her grandmother in 1254. After all, she had a daughter who eventually inherited the three counties in 1257.
