Walter III. of Châtillon (French Gaucher ; † October 1219 ) was a lord of Châtillon , Troissy , Crécy , Montjay , Broigny and Pierrefonds , and by marriage Count of Saint-Pol .

He was a son of Guido II of Châtillon and the Adèle of Dreux, a daughter of Count Robert I of Dreux .

Life

Together with his older brother, Guido III. von Châtillon , Walter accompanied King Philip II of France on the Third Crusade , where his brother died in the siege of Acre in 1191. After his return he supported the king in the fight against the Plantagenets in Normandy . In 1192 he inherited the castle of Pierrefonds from a distant relative, but a year later he exchanged it with the king for Clichy . Walter married Elisabeth in 1196 († around 1240), the heir to Count Hugo IV of St. Pol . After he died in 1205, the couple inherited the county of Saint-Pol.

Walter promoted the establishment of a Trinitarian monastery near Cerfroi by St. Felix of Valois . From Count Theobald III. he became a Grand Chamberlain of Champagne and of Duke Odo III. appointed Seneschal of Burgundy . During the War of Succession in Champagne , he supported the party of Countess Blanka and her son.

In 1209 Gaucher took part in the Albigensian Crusade and fought in the sieges of Béziers and Carcassonne . In 1214 he fought for the King of France in the victorious battle of Bouvines . In 1219 he again took the cross with Prince Ludwig the Lion to the Albigensian Crusade and took part in the Marmande massacre . Shortly afterwards he died.

Walter had divided his possessions among his sons in a will, with the older one mainly taking over the maternal and the younger the paternal inheritance.
