Robert I , called the Great ( le Grand ) (* probably 1123 ; † October 11, 1188, probably in Braine-sur-Vesle ) was the fifth son of the French King Louis VI. and the Adelheid of Savoy .

Life

Probably already in the year of his birth he got the rule over Savigny , in 1132 he received the county Dreux as apanage from his father . Through his three marriages he succeeded in significantly increasing his property.

In 1139/41 he married Agnès de Garlande (* probably 1122; † 1143), the daughter of Anseau de Garlande , Count of Rochefort , and NN de Montlhéry .

His second marriage was around 1144 with Havise von Évreux (* probably 1118; † 1152), the daughter of Walter von Évreux (Gautier d'Évreux), Earl of Salisbury , and Sibylle de Chanort and widow of Rotrou III. Count of Perche .

Robert supported his brother, King Ludwig VII. , In 1143 in the fight against Count Theobald II of Champagne . He conquered Reims and Châlons, among others . In 1147, like many other French nobles, he accompanied his brother on the second crusade and fought in the siege of Damascus in 1148 . Robert broke off the crusade before his brother and returned home several weeks before him. Believing that he could use the mood after the failed crusade, he tried to achieve his own ambitions for the throne. In doing so, however, he was hindered by the regents Suger of Saint-Denis , Archbishop Samson of Reims and Count Rudolf of Vermandois , until the arrival of the king finally brought these plans down.

At the end of 1152 he married Agnes de Baudement (* probably 1130; † between 1202 and 11 July 1218), Countess of Braine , mistress (lady) of Fère-en-Tardenois , Pontarcy , Nesles , Longueville and Quincy , heiress of Guido (Guy) von Baudement, Count von Braine , and Alix, widow of Milon II of Bar-sur-Seine , founder of the Abbey of Saint-Yved (Braine) . Through this marriage he came into possession of his wife's property.

In 1159 he gave the town of Dreux its municipal constitution. He is also the founder of the town of Brie-Comte-Robert , which today bears his name. In 1187 he donated the Saint-Thomas church , which was built next to the Louvre castle.
