Chaworth

Chaworth is the name of an Anglo-Norman aristocratic family, which is derived from the French Château de Sourches in Saint-Symphorien (Sarthe) , which was still called Chourches or Chourses in the 17th century. The name is also written in England Chaors, Chaurces, Chawrces, Chawerches, Schawrces, Chawerch etc., de Cadurcis is the Latin form, Chaworth the one that has prevailed.

The best-known members of the family are Maud Chaworth, the wife of Henry Plantagenet, 3rd Earl of Lancaster (1281-1345), and great-grandmother of King Henry IV , and Mary Chaworth, the childhood sweetheart of Lord Byron .
