Guido Romano (born December 3, 1887 in Modena , † June 18, 1916 Plateau of Asiago ) was an Italian gymnast who took part in the 1908 Summer Olympics in London and the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm . In the latter major tournament, he won the gold medal in the team all-around with the Italians .
Life
Guido Romano was born on December 3, 1887 in the city of Modena in what was then the Kingdom of Italy . At the 1908 Summer Olympics , which took place in London from April 27, 1908 to October 31, 1908 , Romano was used in apparatus gymnastics in an individual all-around competition. He finished in 19th and 20th place in the final ranking and was the second best Italian after Alberto Braglia , this year's Olympic champion in the individual all-around. Four years later, the then 24-year-old also took part in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm . Here he took ninth place in the individual all-around gymnastics and was thus the lowest placed Italian - five compatriots ranked in the places in front of him. This was also one of the reasons that the Italians ultimately received the gold medal in the team all-around competition. A little more than four years after his last participation in the Summer Olympics, Guido Roman died in the First World War on June 18, 1916 during the Austro-Hungarian South Tyrol offensive at the age of 28 in the Asiago basin . The Piscina Romano , a public swimming pool in Via Ampère in Milan , built in 1929 according to plans by Luigi Lorenzo Secchi , is named after the Olympic champion in the team all-round competition of 1912. The congregation and his family dedicated a plaque to him here, which has since been commemorating him.
