Guido Mentasti (* 1897 in Genoa ; † April 6, 1925 in Brescia ) was an Italian motorcycle racer .

Career

In 1923, Mentasti won the V. Raid Nord-Sud from Milan to Naples on a 500 cc Frera. In the same year he became the first factory rider in Moto Guzzi history . On his debut for the manufacturer from Mandello del Lario , he won the II. Giro Motociclistico d'Italia in a five-part stage race over a total of around 2500 kilometers on a normal C2V .

The following year Guido Mentasti won the first ever European motorcycle championship , which took place on September 6, 1924 in Monza as part of the III. The Nations' Grand Prix was held at the Circuito di Milano , on a Moto Guzzi 500 C4V the course of the 500 cc class. He won ahead of his compatriot and brand colleague Erminio Visioli and became the first half-liter European champion in the history of motorcycle racing.

Guido Mentasti died on Monday, April 6, 1925 at the age of 28 in a traffic accident . He was on his Moto Guzzi on his way home from Brescia , where he had taken part in the first round of the Italian road championship the day before , to Milan . Mentasti had set the fastest race lap in this race , but later suffered a tire damage to the front wheel in the fight for the lead , which forced him to cover about ten kilometers back to the pits with a puncture and to cede the victory to Pietro Ghersi on Sunbeam . It is believed that this long ride on the rim the day before was the cause of another tire damage, which caused the Italian to fall and was thrown several meters through the air. Guido Mentasti suffered severe head injuries on impact and died on site.

At the accident site in Via Valcamonica in Brescia, a memorial stone still commemorates the European champion.
