Guido Bachmann (born January 28, 1940 in Lucerne ; † October 19, 2003 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss writer . He lived as a freelance writer and actor in St. Gallen and received several awards for his work.

Life

At the Bern Conservatory studied Guido Bachmann piano and elocution at the University of Bern music history and theater studies.

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is Bachmann's first work published in 1966. The book is dedicated to Bachmann's friend Alfred Arm. Roland Steinmann, the protagonist of the novel, is a highly gifted as well as complicated and endangered youth who gets into trouble because of his adolescent love with another boy named Christian. The educational and problem novel is considered socially critical, modern and timeless.

The novel led to the “ Burgdorf literary scandal” because of its provocative portrayal of human sexuality : When the novel was published in 1966, it became the talk of the day because of the homoerotic passages it contained. After a reading by Group 67 on January 17, 1967 in Burgdorf, a scandal broke out: High school student Martin Schwander was temporarily excluded from the high school as organizer of the reading, and Group 67 was put under such pressure that it disbanded. Under pressure from the public, the high school student was accepted back into the high school. In May 1967 the book was discussed in the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern .

Werner Helwig described Gilgamesh as a "written record" and "a testimony to a certain desperation of life". The time structure of Gilgamesh, described in detail by Helmut Puff , can be found in lifelong : "The dimension of time has freed itself from the straitjacket of chronology, the 'cursed successions in the novel'." In addition to poems by Johannes Bobrowski and Peter Huchel , Jürgen Joachimsthaler named the novel Gilgamesch by Guido Bachmann as an important treatment of the Gilgamesh theme, clearly influenced by Hans Henny Jahnn in terms of motifs and language .

Later years

In 1990 he received the Literature Prize of the City of Basel for all of his literary work.

In 1997 his work was published for life , an autobiographical novel in two volumes. In it, Bachmann used amateurism as an aesthetic strategy.

In his review of the second part of the autobiographical novel, “conditionally dismissed”, Fredi Lerch wrote: “While he dealt with his youth in the first part published in 1997 under the title“ lifelong ”, he now reports on the jobs he has as a writer and Actor repeatedly accepted to make ends meet financially. ... Bachmann's autobiographical books are similar: on the one hand, the texts are undoubtedly skilfully written and composed, on the other hand, they insist on that antiquated citizen fright gesture that was still able to arouse Bachmann's audiences in the 1960s. "

In the same year he was awarded the Book Prize of the Canton of Bern and in 1998 the Book Prize of the City of Bern for life imprisonment. In 2003 he again received the Canton of Bern Book Prize for summer pasture .
