History and program

Victor Otto Stomps (1897–1970) began in the post-war period in 1949 to print books by largely unknown authors in Frankfurt am Main without financial security . In 1954 he moved with the small publishing house to Stierstadt im Taunus . From 1966 Dieter Hülsmanns and Friedolin Reske (* 1936) became equal partners. In the following year Stomps left the publishing house and went to Berlin, where he had already managed a small publishing house, Rabenpresse , from 1926 to 1937 . Here he founded the Neue Rabenpresse , in which, in addition to books by Fred Viebahn , Johannes Schenk and Christoph Meckelthe anthology anthology appeared as an alibi with texts by all the writers published by the three publishers as well as woodcuts by Günter Bruno Fuchs , Johannes Vennekamp , Arno Waldschmidt , Albert Schindehütte and Uwe Bremer .

In 1972 the Hermit Press moved from Stierstadt to Düsseldorf . Dieter Hülsmanns died in May 1981. At the beginning of 1983 the Hamburg art director Jens Olsson (* 1944) became co-owner. One of the first books published jointly by Reske and Olsson was Alpha Beet , a publishing record with contributions from u. a. Jens Rehn , Max von der Grün , Martin Walser , Friederike Mayröcker , Ben Witter and Ilse Aichinger . The authors Thomas Kling and Detlev Meyer had their first publications in the hermit press. The books were increasingly designed with graphics by visual artists such as Ulrich Erben , Günther Uecker , Otmar Alt , HAP Grieshaber , Sascha Juritz , Jörg Remé or Jan Schüler . Other artists such as Bele Bachem , Bernard Schultze or Fritz Schwegler published their own texts. In 1984 Friedolin Reske and Jens Olsson Christa Reinigs published all of the poems that far exceeded the usual size of hermit books, whose editions were mostly less than a thousand copies.

In 2010 the Eremiten-Presse stopped publishing. Christoph Klimke's collection of poems Bernsteinherz is the 602nd and last title in the program of the multi-colored, artistically particularly valuable books of the Eremiten-Presse.

In the course of the transaction, the Düsseldorf Heinrich Heine Institute acquired manuscripts and correspondence from the publisher.

Authors and Editions

Of the authors and artists who were discovered and published by Victor Otto Stomps or the Eremiten-Presse, several achieved great literary importance, including Christa Reinig , Ernst Meister , Detlev Meyer , Wolfgang Bächler , Gabriele Wohmann , Hans Neuenfels , Thomas Kling , Cyrus Atabay , Ingrid Bachér or Ernst Jandl . The literary magazine Konturen published by Hans Bender , a forerunner of Akzente , as well as the controversial controversial dispute-time script also attracted attention .

Victor Otto Stomps Prize

The Victor Otto Stomps Prize awarded by the state capital Mainz for outstanding achievements in small-scale publishing is a reminder of the importance of the life's work of V. O. Stomps for the world of small publishers in the German-speaking area.
