phenomenology

Guido Rappe has published numerous books and writings that can primarily be assigned to the areas of cultural comparison and phenomenology . The concept of the phenomenal body occupies a central place in his works. Here the influence of Rappe through the body concept of Schmitz's New Phenomenology is evident . In contrast to Schmitz, however, Rappe regards the body as closely intertwined with a person's biography. Correspondingly, Rappe focuses on the task of “daring to try to determine or explain the shares in the physical senses that make the life of the body appear previously shaped by the biography or socialization”. Rappe also speaks of his approach as penetrating the mnemonic dimension of human body experience. While the (bodily understood) dimension of spatial experience is spanned by narrowness and space, the basic categories of temporal experience for black are pleasure and displeasure (in the sense of attraction and repulsion ). Lust stretches the body towards its satisfaction, which results in a rhythm of lack and abundance (as the removal of lack). This rhythm can be felt with hunger and thirst , for example .

At the center of Rappe's reflections on the biographical development of humans is the concept of the gestalt circle , coined by the physician Viktor von Weizsäcker , which refers to "the process of mutual adaptation of body and environment". By conceiving the body as biographically shaped, there are possibilities of connecting Rappe's body phenomenological works to the concept of habitus according to Elias and Bourdieu . For Rappe, the entire bodily dynamic is based on acquired and constitutional bodily dispositions , which can be "understood as habitus forms acquired in the course of life". These essentially shape “the way of being in the world and the way people deal with themselves, others and their environment”.

Subjectivist turn

A central concern in Rappe's work is to contrast the reductionist natural sciences , which are increasingly dominating in our society, with an alternative and genuine humanities perspective. In his view, this appears necessary "in order to maintain the delicate balance between the natural sciences and the humanities that shaped our understanding of science in the modern age". Following Kant's epistemological Copernican turn, Rappe speaks here of the subjectivist turn . This is intended to show a third path running between materialism and idealism , which focuses on the physical subject and its subjectivity . For Rappe, the struggle between idealism and materialism, which he describes as a gigantomachy based on Plato , is carried out on the back of feelings and bodily feeling, although these are the real source of our certainty of being and thus lie at the root of all human knowledge. From the point of view of the subjectivist turning point, there is no other criterion for reality than bodily feeling:

“We are physically in a phenomenal world! This is the basic position of the new subjectivism, which the subjectivist turning point never tires of emphasizing. From here we have to proceed scientifically, ie scientifically and epistemologically! Otherwise we will add what has not been identified and end up in religious dogmatism! "

Rappe sees the origin of the subjectivist turn as an independent trend in Schopenhauer .

Wheel of creativity

In addition to his scientific projects, Rappe founded the "Idea Finder" project in 2005 together with cabaret artist Martin Sommerhoff . This creativity development project is the result of a dialogue between philosophy and art. As part of the project, the wheel of creativity was developed as a creativity technique.
