history

A spiritual origin of the university is the private school Kaitokudō ( die 徳 堂 ), which was founded in 1724. During the Edo period , the Kaitokudō served as an educational institution for the citizens of Osaka and was closed in 1869. In 1916 the school was rebuilt by the Kaitokudō Memorial Foundation ( Kaitokudō Kinenkai ). On March 14, 1945, during the Osaka air raid in the Pacific War , the school lost its school building; only her books survived the war, donated to Osaka University in 1949. Today the Kaitokudō Memorial Foundation is part of the Faculty of Humanities.

Another origin is the private school Tekijuku ( 適 塾 ), which was founded by the doctor Ogata Kōan (1810-1863) in 1838. The school closed in 1869; the teachers and apprentices moved to the new public medical school. It gained university status in 1919. In 1931 the university became the Imperial University of Osaka ( 大阪 帝国 大学 Ōsaka teikoku daigaku ), the eighth of the nine imperial universities . It initially had two faculties: medicine and science. The first campus was on the island of Nakanoshima in the center of Osaka ( 34 ° 41 ′ 31.4 ″  N , 135 ° 29 ′ 27.7 ″  E ). The campus was in use until the 1990s.

In 1933, the former Osaka Technical University ( 大阪 工業 大学 , Ōsaka kōgyō daigaku , founded in 1896) became the Faculty of Engineering ( 34 ° 41 ′ 57.8 ″  N , 135 ° 31 ′ 46.9 ″  O. This campus was used until 1970 ).

In 1947 the Imperial University was renamed Osaka University . In 1949 it was merged with Osaka High School ( 大阪 高等学校 ), Naniwa High School ( 浪 速 高等学校 ; today's Toyonaka campus is its former location) and Osaka Pharmaceutical College ( 大阪 薬 学 専 門 学校 ) to form the new Osaka University.

In Germany the university cooperates u. a. with the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and the University of Bielefeld .
